Cottage style decor is an interior design scheme that makes extensive use of area rugs as essential parts of decorating. They're used to cover floors, unify color schemes, add a sense of coziness to rooms and even to define different room sections.
Some of the most common designs in cottage style decorating are floral rugs, botanical rugs and Southwestern rugs. However, these aren't the only kinds that can be used in the many variations of this design.
Furniture Feet Pads
For example, decorators can mix patterned and solid colored rugs to add colors. Furniture in solid fabrics can be complemented by patterned rugs to give any room energy, while patterned furniture, such as the toiles used in French Country settings, look best with solid colored rugs. The choice for the designer is which aspect of the scheme will be the room's focal point, the furniture or the rug.
A color wheel is key to mixing patterned and solid rugs in cottage decor. By using a color wheel to find complementary colors, a decorator can be sure that the combination will harmonize rather than clash.
Another use for area rugs in cottage style decorating is to define areas of larger rooms. For example, different size rugs can be employed to set off a conversation area and a reading nook. Place a sofa, love seat and coffee table on a larger rug to create the conversation space, and put one or two chairs on a smaller rug for a reading area. It's important to use rugs of different sizes with this technique, because rugs of the same size will make the room look chopped up. An alternative would be to use rugs of different shapes, such as large square rugs for the conversation area and smaller round rugs or oval rugs for the reading nook.
Rooms with terrazzo or tile floors can harmonize with a cottage decorating theme through the use of area rugs as well. For example, measure a room with tile or terrazzo flooring and then deduct two feet from the dimensions. Thus a 10-by-12-foot room would need an 8-by-10-foot area rug. Placed correctly, the large rug will appear to have a tile border all around its edges, making the rug a focal point for the room.
It's also possible to layer rugs on top of wall-to-wall carpeting when creating a cottage room decor. In this instance, small- and medium-sized floral rugs should make the room inviting. For a bedroom, try placing rugs beside the bed, under the front of a chair and in front of a dresser or vanity table.
Runners are also excellent for stairs and hallways in cottage decorating. Centering the running will work the same magic as with the tile floors mentioned earlier; the edges of the flooring will act as a border to the runner, giving it focus. For safety, it's always best to use rug pads or rug tape under runners. On stairs, it may also be necessary to secure a runner with carpet tacks or nails to avoid slipping.
Finally, small, attractive rugs in Native American or even braided designs can be used effectively as wall hangings, depending on the theme. Rugs are really an all-around accessory in cottage decorating.
