A Guide to "Why is My Cat Urinating in The House?"

Are you frustrated with the smell your cat's urine throughout the house? Don't get mad at kitty. Cats are very sensitive to numerous stresses, and there could be medical causes such as Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) or Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). The symptoms of UTI or FLUTD are difficulty urinating, bloody urine, discomfort, and can also include urinating in places other than the litter box. If the cat is showing signs of discomfort or has blood in the urine take kitty to the vet.

Furniture Feet Pads

If there are no other physical signs of illness, the following could be causes of a cat urinating in house. The following is a list of stresses for a cat but there can be many more.

Furniture Feet Pads

o Other cats (inside or out)

o Litter box aversion

o Owner is gone

o New child or pet

o Owner was absent for a lengthy period (vacation, trip, work)

o New house

o New furniture added or moved

Litter box aversion can create urination problems for cat urinating in house because;

o The box is in a noisy area

o Does the cat associate the box with something negative?

o The actual litter material may not be to kitty's liking, try another. This often happens if the cat has been declawed as they don't like the way the litter feels on their foot pads.

o Is another pet bothering the cat while she is using the litter box?

o They may not like the smell if not changed often. Cats are very clean. My cat tries to cover an accident on the tile floor even though no litter is near.

o Is the litter box shared by more than one cat?

o Did you change litter brands? Cats do not like change much.

o Do you have a covered or open box? Try switching

o Is the cat neutered?

Try correcting any of these suggestions and if you are still asking "Why is my cat urinating in house" you may want to try an anxiety medicine or consult your vet for other options.

Is Breast Feeding Best For Babies

New parents aspire to provide their babies with the very best. When it comes to nourishment, the top first food for babies is breast milk.

Furniture Feet Pads

More than 20 years of research has established that breast milk is completely suited to nurturing infants and safeguarding them from illness. Breast-fed babies have fewer rates of hospital admissions, ear infections, diarrhea, rashes, allergies, and other medical troubles compared to bottle-fed babies.

Furniture Feet Pads

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be breast-fed for 6 to 12 months. The only satisfactory option to breast milk is infant formula. Solid foods can be introduced at 4 to 6 months; however, a baby should drink breast milk or formula, not cow's milk, for a full year.

In 1993, 55.9 percent of American mothers breast-fed their babies in the hospital. Only 19 percent continued breast-feeding when their babies were 6 months old. Government and private health experts are working to lift those numbers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration are conducting a study on infant feeding practices as part of its continuing objective to improve nutrition in the United States. The study is looking at the length of time mothers breast-feed and how they introduce formula or other foods.

Health experts say greater breast-feeding rates would save consumers money, spent on infant formula and in health-care. It possibly will save lives as well. In Third World countries, death rates are lower among breast-fed babies. Breast-fed babies are healthier and have fewer infections than formula-fed babies have.

Human Milk for Human Babies
The principal advantage of breast milk is nutritional. Human milk contains just the correct quantity of fatty acids, lactose, water, and amino acids for human digestion, brain development, and growth.

Cow's milk contains a different kind of protein than breast milk. This is excellent for calves, but human babies can have difficulty digesting it. Bottle-fed infants are inclined to be fatter than breast-fed infants are, but not necessarily healthier.

Breast-fed babies have fewer illnesses because a mother's antibodies to disease are transferred to the baby via human milk. About eighty percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. There are a number of illnesses that Breast-fed babies are protected from, in varying degrees, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. In addition, mothers create antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to battle the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.

A breast-fed baby's digestive tract contains large quantities of Lactobacillus bifidus, helpful bacteria that prevent the development of harmful organisms. Human milk direct from the breast is always sterile, never tainted by contaminated water or dirty bottles, which can lead to diarrhea in the infant.

Human milk contains at least 100 ingredients not present in formula. Babies are never allergic to their mother's milk, although they may have a response to something the mother eats. If the mother eliminates it from her diet, the problem resolves itself.

Nursing may have mental benefits for the baby as well, creating an early attachment connecting mother and child. At birth, infants see only 12 to 15 inches, the space between a nursing baby and its mother's face. Studies have found that infants as young as 1 week favor the smell of their own mother's milk. If nursing pads are soaked with breast milk and positioned in their cribs, they turn their faces in the direction of the one that smells familiar.

Numerous psychologists believe the nursing baby enjoys a feeling of safety from the warmth and company of the mother, particularly when there is skin-to-skin contact during feeding. Parents of bottle-fed infants might be tempted to prop bottles in the baby's mouth, providing no human contact during feeding, however a nursing mother must cuddle her baby closely many times throughout the day. Nursing becomes more than a method to feed a baby; it is a source of warmth and comfort.
Benefits to Mothers

Breast-feeding is great for new mothers as well as for their babies. It may be easier for a nursing mother to lose the pounds of pregnancy since nursing uses up additional calories. There are no bottles to sterilize and no formula to buy, measure and mix. Lactation also stimulates the uterus to contract back to its original size.

Because a nursing mother must sit down, put her feet up and relax every few hours to feed the baby she is forced to get much needed rest. There is no need to stumble to the refrigerator for a bottle and warm it while the baby cries. If she is lying down, a mother can doze while she nurses.

Nursing is also nature's contraceptive--although not a very reliable one. Ovulation is suppressed by frequent nursing, making it less likely for a nursing mother to menstruate, ovulate, or get pregnant; however, here are no guarantees, mothers who do not want more children right away should use contraception even while nursing. All barrier methods of birth control such as hormone injections and implants are safe during nursing. The labeling on birth control pills states if possible another form of contraception should be used until the baby is weaned.

When is Formula Necessary
There are very few medical reasons why a mother should not breast-feed.
Most common illnesses, such as colds, flu, skin infections, or diarrhea are not passed through breast milk. In fact, if a mother has an illness, her breast milk will contain antibodies to it that will help protect her baby from those same illnesses.

A few viruses can pass through breast milk, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is one of them. Women who are HIV positive should not breast-feed.

How To Keep Your Hard Floors Looking Great

A first glimpse of a beautifully kept hardwood floor can evoke feelings of richness, warmth, and natural beauty. Hardwood floors also offer the perfect combination of strength and beauty for any indoor environment, and many consumers may be surprised by the limitless choices that wood flooring can offer. However, maintaining a hardwood floor may require some work, as dirt, grit, and dust can be a wood floor's worst enemy. These elements can often act like sandpaper and cause scratches, dents, and even dulling. To keep your hardwood floors looking their best, follow the tips below to protect its warmth and character.

Furniture Feet Pads

Before beginning your cleaning project, it is best to first determine the finish of the floor and to find out if the floor is sealed (and with what), as the finish and not the wood type will ultimately determine how you clean and maintain the floor. To easily tell what type of finish you have, rub your finger across the floor and if no smudge appears, the floor is surface-sealed. If a smudge is indeed created, the floor has been treated with a penetrating seal, varnish, lacquer, oil finish, or shellac, and then waxed.

Furniture Feet Pads

Most new wood floors are usually sealed with either polyacrylic, urethane, or polyurethane, and are stain and water-resistant. These types of floors are often very glossy and may appear as if a layer of clear plastic has been placed on top of the wood. Surface-sealed floors are among the easiest to care for, as sweeping and mopping is all that is really needed in most cases.

However, for penetrating-seal treated or oil-treated floors, these types of matte-finished floors require a bit more work, as a penetrating seal or oil finish is soaked into the wood grain, is hardened, and acts to protect the wood from within. These floors should be treated with the utmost in care and protected with some sort of liquid wax or paste.

Lacquered, varnished, shellacked, or even unfinished floors are technically surface-finished, but they are not as resistant to moisture or spills as other sealants. Floors sealed with these types of finishes or those with no finish should be treated like self-penetrating seal-treated or oil-treated floors.

Obviously, the above guidelines are for more thorough cleaning jobs. For periodic waxing and buffing, be sure to get recommendations from your floor's manufacturer to get specific cleaning procedures. However, to protect and maintain your solid investment, here are some easy hardwood floor maintenance tips every homeowner should follow:

1. Invest in a canister vacuum specially designed for hardwood floors or one that has bare floor attachments, and vacuum once or twice a week to remove dust and particles. These types of vacuums usually include soft brush attachments which minimize unnecessary scratching and scuffing. When sweeping, only use a soft, fine bristle broom to gently pick up debris. Floor vacuums are also great for this purpose.

2. Spills and stains can damage the beautiful exterior of hardwood floors and can also warp the wood itself. Immediately remove wet spills with soft towels or a wet/dry vacuum and dry thoroughly. When mopping, use a dry mop, as excess water can seep into seams and ruin a wood floor. Better yet, a high-quality dust mop - one with a 12" to 19" cotton head - can be used instead.

3. To treat scratches and dents, steel wool or sand paper can be used to remove one or two complete layers of finish across the board where the damage has occurred. However, be sure to remove all dust, apply the same type of finish that was removed, and always follow manufacturer's instructions if you are unsure on how to repair surface finishes.

4. Consider purchasing carpet runners with non-skid pads over wood floors, especially in high-traffic areas. Carpet runners and area rugs should also be regularly vacuumed to prevent dirt from filtering down the weave and scratching the wood underneath.

5. Furniture pads (available cheaply at your local hardware store, home center, or furniture store) should be placed under the legs of tables and chairs and on the feet of armoires and dressers. Also install floor mats at every entrance to prevent dirt from tracking into your home. Furniture pads will prevent furniture and other objects from dragging and sliding across a wood floor.

6. Whenever possible, refrain from wearing heavy shoes or high heels on your hardwood floors, as these can cause denting.

7. Prevent direct sunlight from damaging, discoloring, or possibly even warping your hardwood floors. Add curtains if necessary, and pull the curtains closed during the day or when you will be away for extended periods of time.

Tips for Offering Move-In / Move-Out Cleaning Services

People and businesses are moving from homes, apartments, and offices on a daily basis. As people and businesses move, they either need their old location cleaned or want to make sure their new location is clean before moving in. Your cleaning company can fill this niche by providing what is known as move-in/move-out cleaning. It can be an added service that your cleaning business provides, a way to give employees new skills, and a great way for your company to make more profit!

Furniture Feet Pads

Move in/out cleaning can be cleaning a building after an old tenant moves out or before a new tenant moves in. The type of clients looking for move in/out cleaning includes residential and commercial property owners and managers. Commercial move in/out cleaning can vary from small, quick jobs of just a few thousand square feet to large office buildings of 15,000 square feet and up.

Furniture Feet Pads

A good place to start when looking for move in/out cleaning accounts is to contact property management companies. If you happen to be located in a college town there will probably be no shortage of work. If you have been cleaning commercial buildings, your clients will no doubt ask you to provide move in/out cleaning services when they move into a new office or building.

When first starting out with move in/out cleaning it may be necessary to meet with the property manager on-site to give an estimate on the time it will take to clean the apartment, office, or building. Once you establish a relationship with the property manager you may be able to skip doing an estimate and just bill for your time. They will most likely need floor cleaning services too (carpet, tile, wood). These are specialized cleaning services, which you will charge separately for. Offering these specialized services will also add more profitability to your cleaning company since you will charge more for these services.

The prices charged will vary depending on the type of facility you are cleaning, but you should be able to bill - for your services. Apartment buildings tend to be less profitable than commercial buildings because many apartment managers have a budget to adhere to, so they like their cleaning contractors to bill a flat fee because it's easier to stick to their budget. Cleaning contractors need to be cautious about bidding this way. Some apartments take much longer to clean than others so you don't want to lose money because you underestimated your time.

No matter if you are cleaning a residential apartment, home or a commercial building there are several steps you should take to guarantee your success and your customer's satisfaction with your move in/out cleaning services.

· Use teams of 2 to 4 people for apartment cleaning, depending on the size of the apartment. Larger teams may be needed for commercial locations.

Team members should be specialists in the tasks they are performing. For example, in a two person team, one person will be assigned to dusting, windows, and vacuuming. One person will be assigned to bathrooms, kitchens, hard floor vacuuming, and mopping.

The team leader is responsible for making sure that all equipment and supplies are brought to the job site and gathered when the job is complete. Put all tools and chemicals into a plastic tote.

· Before you begin check with the client to make sure the job site has working utilities. You cannot clean without running water and you need electricity to run a vacuum. If it is the middle of the summer, you should make sure the building's air-conditioning is working properly. Cleaning chemicals and drying times can be affected by heat and humidity.

· Begin cleaning by removing all trash. Pick up all trash that is too large to vacuum. You will be able to vacuum more efficiently as you will not have to stop and pick up large objects.

· Use a microfiber flat mop for cleaning ceilings, walls, baseboards, and doors.

· Proper vacuuming is an important step in move in/out cleaning. Using a backpack vacuum with the proper attachments can speed up the tasks at hand and make work easier on the cleaning staff. Remember to vacuum from high to low, including light fixtures, window tracks, blinds, and along the baseboards. It is also much easier to vacuum out cabinets and drawers than wiping them.

Some of these items will need to be wiped down after vacuuming; light fixtures, insides of cabinets and drawers, ceiling vents, heat registers, and blinds.

· Windows and patio doors should be washed with an applicator and squeegee. Use scrapers or #0000 steel wool to remove stickers and bugs. Be sure the window is wet when using these tools or you could scratch the glass. Frames and tracks should be vacuumed and then wiped down.

· After picking up trash and vacuuming, start cleaning the stuck-on grime and dirt. Chemicals to have on hand include: bowl cleaner, fume-free oven cleaner, window cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, degreaser, neutral floor cleaner, stainless steel polish, and furniture polish. Save money by using concentrated chemicals rather than RTU (ready-to-use) chemicals.

Spray spots and make sure you give dwell time so the chemicals have time to work. It is important that you have enough air movement so employees do not breathe in fumes. Make sure that your employees have the correct personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.) when working with chemicals.

· Deep cleaning. If you need to loosen build-up, use the correct cleaning tools - paper towels, terry cloth rags, microfiber cloths, pads, brushes and scrapers. Use caution when using these tools - you don't want to damage surfaces.

. Use paper towels, terry cloth rags, or microfiber cloths for most cleaning tasks. Use a green microfiber cloth for dusting; blue for windows, glass and polished surfaces; red for cleaning restrooms and yellow for countertops, sinks and walls.

. Use hand brushes for scrubbing showers, sinks, stoves, and refrigerators. Use grout brushes for cleaning up grout on countertops and ceramic tile floors. Toothbrushes can be used for detail cleaning around faucets and around the rims in toilet bowls.

. Use white pads for surfaces such as glass, chrome, stainless steel and plastic. This is because white pads are not as abrasive as green pads.

. Green pads are good for greasy areas including cabinets, toilets and scrubbing shower stalls. Be careful when using green pads however, as they can scratch surfaces.

. Use a 2" utility scraper for build-up and adhesives in kitchens and bathrooms.

· Save time by spraying the inside of the refrigerator and showers/tubs with a pump-up sprayer rather than using a spray bottle. When cleaning kitchens, be sure to pull out the stove and refrigerator. Clean the walls, sides of appliances, sides of cabinets, floor, and vacuum the coils. Also clean the oven hood and filters.

· Clean floors last. Use the backpack vacuum to give the floors a final vacuuming, and then mop all hard surface flooring.

Offering move in/out services is one way to start your cleaning business. It also provides a way for an established cleaning company to provide added services to their existing clients while putting extra dollars onto the bottom line.

Decorating Quick Tips - Carpet and Rugs

Carpet

Furniture Feet Pads

Least maintenance and most durable is level loop (often called "Berber"). The loop construction provides 4x the surface of wear, hence it's durability. It doesn't show tracking at all, and now comes in patterns and colors for every taste. Keep your carpet neutral and consistent throughout for greatest flexibility and resale. Use color in rugs, they are personal and move with you, carpet doesn't

Furniture Feet Pads

High twist cut pile, also known as frieze, is considered trackless. That is it doesn't show vacuum and foot prints as easily as a regular cut pile. Qualities vary.

Velvet plush cut pile while certainly the softest underfoot, shows every mark, foot print, pet paw print, and vacuum tracks. It is very formal in nature and maintenance intensive.

Shag is back! Fun in a contemporary environment, but watch the depth, it isn't rakeable anymore and can still swallow pet turtles.

Rugs

Rugs are appropriate for every room and over wall to wall, not just hardwood. They will anchor a furniture grouping and add interest and softness. They are truly artwork for the floor.

For size, the rule of thumb is that it should have all your furniture on it (such as a 9x12 in a family room) or all your furniture off it, (such as a 6x9 in the same room) the obvious exception being a coffee table or ottoman. Try to avoid the furniture resting half on/half off. Most dining rooms require at least an 8x10 rug to avoid the chairs "falling off."

Smaller rugs make great accents and you aren't paying to cover them up with furniture! Be careful though, substituting a 4x6 for a 6x9 will leave you looking like you have a postage stamp on the floor.

Rugs can also make a significant impact on acoustics in rooms with lots of windows and vaulted ceilings. They can even be changed seasonally for mood shift!

Runners

Runners are an important consideration not just for aesthetics but for safety and acoustics value. On stairs noise often is amplified, a runner will muffle the traffic sounds. In hallways, runners serve to breakup a tunnel like effect with pattern and warmth.

Rug Pads

Be sure to buy the proper pad for your rugs. Pads extend the life of the rug, as well as protecting the floor beneath it.

For hardwood and tile floors you'll want a superloc pad which has a rubberized backing on one side, and a thick jute/felt pad on the other. Do not use the waffle type pads, they can leave marks requiring refinishing on hardwood, and the superloc will even out any tile variance. For vinyl floors, a waffle pad or other slim line pad is acceptable.

On carpet a miracle hold pad or a sticky back pad is recommended. This pad has adhesive on both sides, one to adhere to the carpet, the other to stick to the rug, preventing the age old challenge of creep in the rug, and giving an extra layer of protective backing to prevent any bleed through of colors from rug to carpet.

Stain Guard

Most reputable rug dealers will offer a stain guarding program. Some offer it free of charge with every purchase. Forcefield is the name brand of choice. It doesn't actually prevent stains, no stain guard does, it does give you considerable extra time to clean up, as it provides a protective shield on the surface forcing any spillage to bead up rather than be absorbed.

When Should You Be Pond Feeding in the Winter?

Knowing when you should be pond feeding in the winter, and what you should be feeding your fish, is very important. Fish are weakened by the winter, and what you feed them during that time can ensure their health come spring, and make them less vulnerable.

Furniture Feet Pads

Proper feeding helps your fish to stay healthy. As a general rule, you should give your fish the same types of nutrients that they would have in their natural habitat. Always make sure to cook any fish that you feed to your carnivorous fish however, to make sure all diseases and parasites are dead.

Furniture Feet Pads

Insects are another good food to feed your fish, with examples being spiders, worms, and grubs. This will help to keep your fish healthy. You do need to make sure any live insects that you feed your fish cannot bite or otherwise hurt them.

If your pond has either Koi or Goldfish, remember that each has different dietary needs. Koi eat meat, while Goldfish are more likely to eat insects. Every different type of fish has different food needs, so make sure you research the different fish that you own.

You can also supplement the diet of your fish with dried fish food. This will provide your fish with Vitamins B and C, and spirulina. You can also look for foods supplemented with wheat germ or fish oil, good for all types of fish.

Knowing when to stop pond feeding in winter depends on what temperature the water is at. You should make sure to always have a thermometer in your pond. And remember, as winter begins, you need to begin feeding your fish differently to prepare them.

Once the water temperature dips below 70 degrees, you should begin to add a wheat germ base to your fish food. At 60 degrees, you should begin feeding your fish an all wheat germ diet, cutting out all other aspects.

If your water stays above 55 degrees all winter, you can continue to feed your fish. Make sure though that you stop feeding if the teperature goes below 50 degrees, as any food after that point could kill your fish. These tips will help you with pond feeding in the winter!

How to Find Adhesive Ruler Tape

Knowing the Types of Adhesive Ruler Tape

Furniture Feet Pads

Adhesive ruler tapes are used for accurate measurements. These ruler tapes use adhesives so that the ruler stays in place during the course of measuring such as for photographing purposes and the like. This is especially used for cases wherein there is a need for a stable measuring device but long wooden rulers are not applicable. It is also used when ordinary tapes will not be able to measure as accurate as preferred because of the tapes instability.

Furniture Feet Pads

These tapes were made in such a way that it can be removed without damaging the surface it is stuck on for measurement. But these tapes, if left in place for a long time, can become semi-permanent. These ruler tapes are often used for areas that require pinpoint accuracy and precision such as in forensics. It can be used for measuring walls and floor lengths, wires, fabrics and other continuous materials. It can also be used to measure liquids by placing the adhesive tape in the container or in a tank. These tapes also have a lot of outdoor use such as that for measuring length of fishing boats, boards, etc.

There are different kinds of adhesive ruler tapes. There are also different widths and lengths commercially available. Some adhesive ruler types are based on the ruler unit measurements. The fractional ruler type uses the US standard for measurement, meaning inches and feet. The increments in this ruler types are normally are broken down in 1/32", 1/16", 1/10", or 1/8". The metric ruler types use the metric units of measurements.

The measurements are read in millimeters, centimeters or meters. Some rulers are a combination of the two. One side of the ruler uses inches and feet while the other uses metric measurements. These ruler types are called fractional-meter adhesive ruler tapes. Some of this type is also based on the ruler reading direction. The right to left type has numbers starting from the left increasing as it moves to the right. The right to left rulers has numbers starting from the left increasing to the right.

Some rulers are called center ruler tapes. The measuring starts from a central point and moves in both directions. Another type of adhesive ruler is the half-scale ruler. These tapes are designed to measure based on a half scale. This means that the actual measurement has to be converted based from a scale. Ruler types are also based on the type. Easy read tapes are those that are wide. The other type is the narrow ones.

Some users opt to make custom adhesive rulers. However, most users of adhesive ruler tapes must be able to distinguish and determine the types of adhesive ruler that they are to use. To know which ruler type to use, the first consideration is the system of measurement to be used. Fractional types are used for measurements required in feet or inches while metric tapes are used for measurements required in meters. In cases where in both units of measurements are used, it would be easier to use the fractional-meter type. Another thing to decide upon is the type of ruler based on the width. For measurements that are wide, the easy read tape is more suitable. But if, for example, a string is to be measured, the narrow tape is better to use. Other considerations for the adhesive ruler tape to use include the direction of reading, the maximum length that the ruler can measure, and the ruler properties such as thickness and material. Given the right type of adhesive tape, an accurate measurement would be easy to achieve.

How to Clean a Memory Foam Mattress

Cleaning a memory foam mattress can be a herculean task. The bigger the mattress the harder and heavier it is to handle. After all, one of the original reasons for getting a memory foam mattress in the first place was to get a comfortable bed, right?

Furniture Feet Pads

If you have a king size bed (which is both a luxurious blessing and a problem gift) then you will need someone else to help you to turn it and to clean it. Luckily, the cleaning part really only needs to be done if someone has been sick on it or has had an accident; or if you have bought a second hand memory foam mattress. It is always advisable to thoroughly clean any second hand mattress because all mattresses absorb dead skin cells from people's skin. It doesn't matter how clean people are, the dead skin cells come off our skin at night and become food for mites in our mattresses.

Furniture Feet Pads

If you have to actually use water on it to clean the mattress, and I recommend that you do this in warm to hot weather and in your back yard. I would also not advise placing the mattress on the ground to wash it simply because it gets too heavy to lift once it gets full of water. After all, it is still foam. You need to place it on something that is raised off the ground so the water and cleaning fluid can pour through and any excess can drain away.

Just think of a foam bath sponge and how that gets heavier once it has been soaked in water. Well, if you multiply that "x" number of times depending on the size of your mattress, you will start to get some idea of the weight that it becomes.

If I was to clean my memory foam mattress today, this is how I would do it:

I would get one of my stronger family members to help me carry the mattress out onto the veranda where the boards have half inch gaps between the timber. This is a good place to drain excess water away safely. I would get a plastic bucket of warm water and place 1 cup of apple cider vinegar in and stir it around so it was evenly mixed. Then I would get a spray bottle and a 'magic clothe' and start spraying and wiping on one corner and work my way across the top of the mattress spraying and wiping everything and working my way back to the other side so it was done in a zig-zag pattern.

Once the mattress was dampened through but not necessarily dripping through, I would leave it to dry in the sunshine. If it got excessively wet due to a lot of water needed to clean off soiled material, I would walk barefoot across it and try squeezing some of the excess water out of it with my feet.

The mattress needs to be left in the open air to dry. Once the mattress is just damp, I would start turning it on its sides to let the air circulate around it to dry it completely.

IMPORTANT: Do not ever use a damp mattress. Firstly, if you do you could get very ill with pneumonia. Secondly, the dampness will rot the foam and destroy the memory capability. Thirdly, the smell of mildew and dampness will become increasingly unpleasant and if anyone suffers from Asthma, the mould will cause enormous breathing problems. So if you have to wash your memory foam mattress, please make sure it is completely dry before returning it to the bed.

Super Adhesive May Have Many Industrial Uses - Learning from Geckos

Science works fast, especially when it comes to adhesives. A few years back, the BBC Wildlife magazine published a little story on gecko lizards. They referred to the little creatures as cling kings because they're known to cling to surfaces even when the surface is held upside down. The year was 2002, and scientists were just beginning to speculate that the trick wasn't in what appeared to be little suction cups on their toes and feet as had always been believed. In fact, the scientists continued, those little suction pads were too small to generate enough suction to adhere them to any surface. No, suction didn't account for the adhesive quality of the little gecko.

Furniture Feet Pads

Nor, apparently, did capillary action, nor static electricity. In fact, the article concluded, the gecko sticks to surfaces by molecular adhesion. And that adhesive is strong. Scientists estimate that a gecko's adhesive would stay adhered to the ceiling even if it were wearing a 40kg rucksack on its back. Over the past several years, scientists in various industrial adhesives laboratories have been trying to figure out exactly how this effect works, and how to duplicate it. Now it appears that it's been done. Scientists at BAE Systems, an aeronautics and defence firm, have created an adhesive that they call Synthetic Gecko, and that others are referring to as 'gecko glue'.

Furniture Feet Pads

The gecko adhesive is made of polymer, and is reusable, say the scientists who developed the stuff. And it's strong - just one metre square of the industrial adhesive could hang your family's car from the ceiling of your kitchen. It will stick to just about anything, including dirty surfaces, and it will stay stuck until it's peeled off - at which point, it can be reapplied without losing any of its adhesive qualities or power. There are stronger glues out there, scientists admit, but this one is reusable, and it doesn't feel sticky to the touch.

The secret is in the structure of Synthetic Gecko. The polyamide surface is covered with millions of mushroom like stalks that mimic the tiny cups on the pads of gecko feet called setae. This isn't the first adhesive made to mimic the gecko foot. Back in 2003, a group of Manchester researchers produced a similar product which they called 'gecko tape'. They demonstrated the effectiveness of the new dry adhesive by suspending a toy action figure of superhero Spiderman from a ceiling. They'd considered suspending a human, one of the team admitted, but the amount needed would have been far too costly to produce.

The Bristol team at BAE Systems has worked their way around the cost by using a modified version of the process used to make silicon chips to create the tiny setae on the polymer surface. The process is well-known and understood, and can be done cheaply to run up to a very large scale, making production of Synthetic Gecko a financially viable proposition.

Needless to say, this gecko like glue is causing quite a stir in the industrial adhesives industry. The possibilities for its use as an industrial adhesive are broad. Already there is speculation that it could be used to attach aeroplane wings, make skin graft or create Spiderman like suits that would let window-washers scramble up the sides of buildings without the use of a ladder. Imagine super grip tyres, safety harnesses and instant repair patches for nearly anything. The uses are still potentially years off, say most scientists, and even then Synthetic gecko is unlikely to replace other types of industrial adhesives. Each has its own use and its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Still, the possibilities are profound for the new dry adhesive. From medicine to construction, it may offer a great many changes in the way that things are stuck together.

Choosing Hardwood Flooring

Despite an ever-increasing range of alternatives, the allure of feeling the luxury and organic beauty of hardwood flooring (also referred to as solid wood flooring) under your feet appears not to have diminished at all. Hardwood flooring has been an ever popular flooring solution for hundreds of years, yet in spite of its longevity, the material is not suffering any lack of innovation, with new, greener and more sustainable options to choose from - such as bamboo flooring - the market is still very much alive.

Furniture Feet Pads

There are a number of useful considerations to make when choosing hardwood flooring as your preferred option. Probably the most important is its suitably for the room you wish to fit it in. Some types of hardwood flooring are unsuitable for certain applications; one of which being for use with underfloor heating systems. This is because natural hardwoods have a tendency to react significantly to changes in temperature, which eventually result in a lot of movement occurring between the flooring. If you're looking for a real wood finish to combine with an underfloor heating system, you're better off considering an engineered wood solution. Despite this exception, solid wood flooring is useful in many different types of applications, and is still considered a terrific option.

Furniture Feet Pads

Contrary to popular opinion, hardwood flooring is an excellent value-for-money option, and in many cases is less expensive than its market rival engineered wood. For one thing, because hardwood flooring comprises of solid wood, the quality of the product is quite simply as good as nature itself has made it. Therefore, when purchasing a high-quality variety of wood such as oak or walnut from a wood flooring specialist, you can be sure that the material is quite simply - organically excellent. There is no need to worry that the glue between the ply's is not going to last, or that the veneer might come off during heavy use. Hardwood flooring is a quality solution.

Maintaining your hardwood flooring is a straightforward and rewarding task. Remember not to clean your floor with anything abrasive, and to fix soft pads to the bottom of your furniture to prevent scratching and denting from occurring. Good quality laminate and wood cleaners are available from all respectable tile and wood flooring specialists, which help to form a self-polishing film, highly resistant to wear and dirt that will leave your floor both clean and protected. Another fantastic advantage of hardwood flooring is that you don't have to worry about the degree to which you sand down the surface in the event of damage occurring, or simply when wishing to freshen it up. Other types of flooring such as engineered wood have a limited depth on the top veneer, but since hardwood is solid, there is no need to be concerned over it.

Available in so many different shapes, colours and sizes, hardwood flooring is a very aesthetically versatile option, even though it's an organic material. Popular types of hardwood include hevea, oak and walnut, and are available in an enormous range of finishes such as solid, lacquered, stained honey, handscraped, distressed, oiled, brushed and coated - to name but a few. When choosing a finish, be sure to research the differences in property between you options, as these can have implications for the amount of maintenance that may be involved, and also the way in which the flooring will likely develop in character with time and use. Some finishes may have a longer shelf-life before you have to reapply them - wax, and some oils are examples of this. Others, such as UV coatings will likely last much longer and will provide more protection to the wood, but make provide the aesthetic quality you desire.
