Remember when, as a kid, you would spot the "rainbows" in the puddles? Well, now you know that was just a layer of oil over the water. It is a frequent question as to why oil poses such a great threat. If you went over your school books with care you would know that oil and water do not mix. Oil is just 0.1 mm thick and much lighter than water. It can only sink in with the help of some sort of a residue, namely, sand, silt or algae. There are certain types of oils, such as the ones used for burning in electric utility plants, which, unlike ordinary oil, are heavier than water.

You can well imagine then, that if this oil enters the water body, it forms a tight layer on the water surface and ends up cutting the oxygen supply. This obviously severely affects the breathing of the life under water. In response to this ongoing disaster, The United States Congress has come up with the Clean Water Act . The responsibility of using proper spill response mechanisms in order to treat the toxic waste before emptying it into the sea is now the law.

Absorbents are available in various types. Different pads are available depending on the different purpose they need to serve. Oil spill absorbents soak up the oil from all that waste. Harmful hydrocarbons like gasoline, lubricants and fuels are soaked up in these pads.
In fact, there is such a diverse assortment of absorbents on the market, that very often, companies find themselves buying unnecessarily expensive products which do not even meet their basic requirements. It is, however, an absolute necessity that companies have a sufficient amount of product on hand to handle their potential needs. Thus, it is a never-ending challenge for these companies to find absorbents that solve their problem and are economical to purchase.
Absorbents are only a minor part of this damage control scheme that helps address some important environmental issues. They only represent a lucrative way to manage such harmful accidents. For the sanitation of a workplace setting and for certain special emergency spill needs, companies should have a large supply of absorbent pads in stock.
The a range of different types of Absorbent Pads that can be purchased, depending on your needs are given below:
* Universal Maintenance Absorbent Pads:
These are generally made of melt blown polypropylene. They are usually grey in color. They are useful in managing your daily maintenance needs as well as spills. They are equally effective with water based fluids as well as hydrocarbons. Please note that these pads absorb all liquids and will sink if used on water.
* Oil Absorbent Pads:
These are also made of polypropylene. They are usually white in color. These pads only absorb hydrocarbons and will repel water. They can be used on land or on water. In reference to the "rainbow" mentioned above, these pads will absorb that oil sheen and not sink because they repel water.
* Anti-Static Absorbent Pads:
In situations of oil spillage where sparking is a likelihood, these pads are used as an extra security measure. They are almost made of the same components as the universal pads. They are usually white in color. They will work at absorbing all hydrocarbon and chemicals. They find their utilization in dry areas with low humidity where cleaning up of highly volatile fuels is essential.
* Hazmat Absorbent Pads:
These polypropylene pads are generally yellow in color. They will absorb all liquids and hydrocarbons but are also made special for absorbing aggressive fluids such as acids and solvents. When you are not sure what type of chemical you will need the pads for, this is a good product to have on hand.
All of the types of absorbents outlined above are also available in absorbent socks and absorbent pillows. Spill kits are also available in the types of absorbents mentioned above. Spill kits come in various sizes and different types of containers but most include absorbent pads, socks, pillows and safety equipment such as goggles and gloves.
